Milestones

Two things happened this weekend that I didn't believe would happen:

1. Robert met my Mom, Step Dad, Brother and his girlfriend over dinner.

2. We reached 5 months of dating.

I was reluctant of introducing Robert to my family. I didn't want to rush things nor put pressure on him. It's a big step. About a week ago I felt comfortable with the idea of him meeting my family and casually brought it up in conversation one night. Without hesitation, he agreed. It was obvious I was more nervous than he was but it went very well. We ate, drank and were merry. My step Dad had bought a $70 bottle of wine back in 2004 and was saving it for a special occasion. Apparently me bringing a boy home to meet the family was considered a special occasion. I was touched by his gesture, and Robert was too.

I'm not sure why, but all of my past relationships never made it past 5 months. It's like I have an expiration date, things turn sour QUICK and I need to be tossed. I've tried not to think about it too much as I've been dating Robert but sometimes it can't be helped. This relationship has been very different on all accounts and if I was completely honest with myself, this is probably the first legit REAL relationship I've ever been in. Based on his actions and words, I am very much his girlfriend and it feels good to know that I am his girl and he is my guy.

I'm smiling on the inside and out. For the first time, I am truly happy and feel secure in a relationship. A concept that was so foreign to me for so many years. They say when you find the right person, it just works. There is so much truth in that statement. Though I am still very much taking it day by day with him, I'm finding myself letting my guard down a bit more. You can't move forward in a relationship until you let somebody in. I'm still unsure what the future will bring for us but I am sure happy he is a part of my present.
