I'm a Criminal

I managed to make it 14 years without being pulled over or getting a speeding ticket, until the morning of Friday, September 26th at 7:20am in Lakeville. I had spent the night at P's house and was on my way to work. I was merging onto 35 and one of the cars woudln't let me in, so I did what anyone else would do, speed up. I merged in and within 30 seconds I had flashing lights behind me. F.

Officer: "I clocked you going 81 in a 70. Are you aware the speed limit is 70 here?"

Me: "Yes, I'm sorry... I was trying to merge onto the interstate and the guy wouldn't let me in."

Officer: "You do realize the speed limit is 70, right ma'm."

Me: "I understand that, and I apologize. I was trying to merge into traffic."

Officer: "Everything current?"

Me: "Yes"

Officer: "Ok, I'll be back in a few minutes."

Me: Shit.

Officer: "Ok, here is your ticket.""

Me: "If you take a look at my record, you will see I have never been pulled over and no tickets, can this be waived?"

Officer: "I know, I saw that. That is why I am shocked you were speeding."

Me: "Please sir, I am a good driver with a clean record."

Officer: "You can go to court and fight it if you want. You were breaking the law and I was doing my job."

Whatever. It's was the end of the month. Ahole needed to make his quota.

Grrrr... so... I'm a criminal. My clean record is now tainted with a stupid speeding ticket for a stupid reason. I love how it says "Petty Misdemeanor." Yikes. I paid the stupid thing yesterday. $130 contribution to the great ol state of MN. Whatevs. Since the unfortunate incident, I drive like a Grandma.

That's CRAZY! I can't believe it. I would probably fight it (but I know that's much easier to say than do). When I was in college, I got two tickets at the site of an accident (I had caused). I went to court to fight it and they dropped one of them. I didn't expect them to drop either of them, since I kind of deserved them (inattentive driving, and following too close), but I guess it's pretty common for them to drop a ticket if you bother to show up for court. Who knew?

Oh, man, I'm sorry. Luckily they only take a few years to disappear. I've had like 6+
